This was a variation on the “Nobody Ever Told Me” series of 1 minute videos July invited the audience to make at screenings, usually finishing the sentence with a piece of self-taught knowledge. In this unique version July asked participants to describe their friend Sarah (everyone has a friend named Sarah), explaining that she had gone missing. The various Sarah combine to form a portrait of one complex, contradictory woman.

The Amateurist
Appears on Joanie 4 Jackie 4Ever (1998)
A “professional” woman monitors an “amateur” woman (both played by July) via video surveillance, as she has for the last four and a half years. She has never had direct contact with the amateur, but creates a sense of communion through numbers, knobs and careful language.
Atlanta
Appears on The Underwater Chainletter (1996)
I made Atlanta during two weeks in July. It was a million degrees in my apartment so I was living under cold water in my bathtub. I borrowed Tammy Rae’s video camera. And I edited it at Reed College (pretended I went there). It’s about pressure.
